Preferably take a direct flight to Singapore when going for the first time look fir students concession. Singapore Airlines has good service and direct flights. On landing at Singapore Changi Airport look for prepaid SingTel sim card with some data then you can then port it to some other provider later.
Preferably open a DBS account at the branch nearest to your place of residence. As residence proof for bank account submit final offer letter from NUS and student status containing address from edurec. Rent agreement is not accepted as address proof.

Buy a couple of Type G convertors for electrical devices.

If you have a post paid connection retain it instead of converting to prepaid. If possible leave the post paid card back in India. Tell someone to use it once in a while.

Buy a queen size bedsheets.

NUS doesnt provide temporary accomodation. He can apply for accomodation for the hostel but that’s it. Otherwise, I dont know if he plans on looking for a room or for a house alongwith other students. He can get a room to himself for around 900-950 SGD around NUS, in clementi. Rents have gone up recently otherwise it was possible to get a room around 850 as well earlier. a 3BHK house (without any condo facilities) will be ~3k per month (might go a bit higher as well). Usually the person/s taking the master bedroom pay more than what otherwise would be an equal spliy.
You can stay at a backpackers for 10 odd days while figuring out  accomodation out after landing. You can probably stay at a relative/family friend’s place for a week or so till you figure stuff out.
Start ooking for accomodation online while in India so that you can setup viewings when you land and finalise a place. It is getting more and more difficult to find a place these days and people confirm with the deposit just by looking at the photos.

If he is looking for a room to himself: Facebook (lots of flats and flatmate groups, can even find people to team up with), roomies.sg (a portal to look for flatmates, again can find people to team up with as well) and on carousell.sg. I would suggest that he look for a room with no landlord staying and cooking allowed so that he can have that freedom. Otherwise, you can find rooms where there is a stay-in owner but that would mean cooking only allowed to the extent of boiling water/noodles (“light cooking allowed”) and no freedom to have friends over.

If he is looking for flat: Facebook again, and other websites like 99.co, propetryguru, rentinsingapore, carousell etc where he can find flat listings. I would suggest to take one without agent’s fee, which is half a month’s rent usually. And take an HDB (government constructed flats) as they are cheaper, but dont come with any facilities like pools, gym access etc. He can avail those things at NUS where he will have free access.

I dont thing anyone deals in USD here in day to day transactions. He will have to get it exchanged for SGD anyway when he reaches here to get by. So it might be better if you consider just giving him some SGD only (both cash and prepaid card). Then he can open a bank account here (DBS, UOB, OCBC are the most common ones). You can then directly transfer money to his Singapore bank account from India as well. Some merchants will only take payments through a local payment system called NETS (like India has UPI) which wont work with prepaid cards
I just meant like a backpackers hostel. There will be plenty around in Singapore and would be the cheapest accomodation available. Can be found on any hotel booking website like bookings.com, trivago etc.

Ashoka University Application Process

I have tried to put down all my lesson learnt in the Ashoka University admission process for undergraduate studies.

1. Use an email address which can be shared between applicant and parent so that this can be readily used by both when required. The online test also requires the student to login to the email account to receive instructions. Ensure the registration e-mail and password are known to both student and parent.

2. Ensure you have the following e-mail ids in your contacts/address book to ensure that mails from Ashoka University are received in inbox.
 admissions@ashoka.edu.in
financialaid@ashoka.edu.in

Some e-mail sites might mistake the mails as spam and move it to those folders.

3. The first step is to register your user id which the e-mail id and a password. Keep the details written down somewhere so that they can be referred to.

4. Before you start the application download the sample application and prepare thoroughly.
List down all certificates of your ward has won in the past 4 years so if he or she is in 12 th class now list from 9th class onward.

Extracurricular - 5 Nos., Co-curricular - 5 Nos., Miscellaneous Extracurricular - 2 Nos., Social Impact - 3 Nos., Leadership 3 Nos., Miscellaneous - 2 Nos.

Scan certificates as pdf documents.

If you are a resident of Haryana please get a resident certificate from local Zilla Parishad office.

5. For the recommendation be in close touch with the recommender. Before submitting the form click on Notify recommender button on the form which is below details of recommender. This will send an intimation to the recommender for submitting the recommendation. Check with the recommender. This will ensure that the system recognizes the e-mail of the recommender. Keep checking with recommender if he/she have received a link for submitting the recommendation.

The recommendation should be submitted by one of the applicant's teachers. Suggest to recommender to have "admissions@ashoka.edu.in" in contacts/address book to ensure that mails from Ashoka University are received in inbox.

6. Apply in 1st round so that it can take some pressure off board exams.

7. Write an essay as required in the application.

Following are some questions which could be answered in the recommendation:

a. Since how long have you known the applicant and in what capacity?
b. Please comment on the strengths of the applicant or what are the most outstanding qualities of the applicant?
c. Please comment on the weaknesses of the applicant or what are the areas of improvement?
d. Please state the peer group against which you have compared the applicant
e. Rate ability to take initiative and academic performance
f. How strongly do you recommend the applicant.
g. While expressing the strengths or weaknesses one should use specific examples.

Had done the following preparation for son's interview:
a. A plastic folder with all original documents with cover sheets mentioning all details as entered in the Ashoka application.
b. Balance certificates with cover sheets and papersheets
c. Headlines from newspapers of past six months preferably related to the UG course opted for.
d. Cut outs of important newspaper articles related to te UG course opted for
e. Compilation of what one could do for interview based on Quora.

Notes - HT Aspirations 2017

HT Aspirations 2017

If you are studying Science in std. 12 with Maths, Physics, Chemistry, Economics and English and are interested in Economics consider changing to commerce which has English, Maths, Eco, Accounting and Business Studies.

For Economics

DU offers an academic course which does not turn you into a professional however nowadays to get a job one needs good communication skills, presentation skills. DU does not have any industry visit, no professionals come to give lectures, also there are no extra curricular activities, internship is also not compulsory in DU.

Pass courses e.g. BA (Pass) courses are lighter courses, they have lesser subjects and preferred by those who do not want to pursue further education.

IP Univ is a government Univ which has private colleges affiliated with it.IP university is better than DU in terms of activities in college. Surajmal and JIMS are considered good colleges in IP university.

Lovely professional university is a good University, they have personality development courses. Total intake in each year is 16000.

GD Goenka has Economics course offered by Lancaster University which it seems is not recognized in India. It is suitable for those planning to go abroad.

Shiv Nadar
60% compulsory courses and 40 % can choose from other disciplines.

ISBF gives London School Economics degree. Those aspiring to join LSE and cannot make it join ISBF and such other colleges. Its better to join indian colleges and get Indian degree as Indian schools teach locally relevant economics. UBS has PG courses.

Future is in design, China produces 60000 Designers while India 3000 so there is great potential.
India has about 7000 years of history, Britain 1000 and US 200+ and the way Trump is going ….
