Preferably take a direct flight to Singapore when going for the first time look fir students concession. Singapore Airlines has good service and direct flights. On landing at Singapore Changi Airport look for prepaid SingTel sim card with some data then you can then port it to some other provider later.
Preferably open a DBS account at the branch nearest to your place of residence. As residence proof for bank account submit final offer letter from NUS and student status containing address from edurec. Rent agreement is not accepted as address proof.
Buy a couple of Type G convertors for electrical devices.
If you have a post paid connection retain it instead of converting to prepaid. If possible leave the post paid card back in India. Tell someone to use it once in a while.
Buy a queen size bedsheets.
NUS doesnt provide temporary accomodation. He can apply for accomodation for the hostel but that’s it. Otherwise, I dont know if he plans on looking for a room or for a house alongwith other students. He can get a room to himself for around 900-950 SGD around NUS, in clementi. Rents have gone up recently otherwise it was possible to get a room around 850 as well earlier. a 3BHK house (without any condo facilities) will be ~3k per month (might go a bit higher as well). Usually the person/s taking the master bedroom pay more than what otherwise would be an equal spliy.
You can stay at a backpackers for 10 odd days while figuring out accomodation out after landing. You can probably stay at a relative/family friend’s place for a week or so till you figure stuff out.
Start ooking for accomodation online while in India so that you can setup viewings when you land and finalise a place. It is getting more and more difficult to find a place these days and people confirm with the deposit just by looking at the photos.
If he is looking for a room to himself: Facebook (lots of flats and flatmate groups, can even find people to team up with), roomies.sg (a portal to look for flatmates, again can find people to team up with as well) and on carousell.sg. I would suggest that he look for a room with no landlord staying and cooking allowed so that he can have that freedom. Otherwise, you can find rooms where there is a stay-in owner but that would mean cooking only allowed to the extent of boiling water/noodles (“light cooking allowed”) and no freedom to have friends over.
If he is looking for flat: Facebook again, and other websites like 99.co, propetryguru, rentinsingapore, carousell etc where he can find flat listings. I would suggest to take one without agent’s fee, which is half a month’s rent usually. And take an HDB (government constructed flats) as they are cheaper, but dont come with any facilities like pools, gym access etc. He can avail those things at NUS where he will have free access.
I dont thing anyone deals in USD here in day to day transactions. He will have to get it exchanged for SGD anyway when he reaches here to get by. So it might be better if you consider just giving him some SGD only (both cash and prepaid card). Then he can open a bank account here (DBS, UOB, OCBC are the most common ones). You can then directly transfer money to his Singapore bank account from India as well. Some merchants will only take payments through a local payment system called NETS (like India has UPI) which wont work with prepaid cards
I just meant like a backpackers hostel. There will be plenty around in Singapore and would be the cheapest accomodation available. Can be found on any hotel booking website like bookings.com, trivago etc.
